What Is a Treadmill Stress Test and Why Is It Important?

A treadmill stress test, also known as a cardiac stress test, is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates how your heart responds to physical exertion. During the test, you’ll walk on a treadmill while we monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram (EKG) to assess your heart’s performance under stress. At Neuro Heart Clinic, we provide stress testing for heart in Knoxville to help identify heart issues early and guide effective treatment plans.

You may need a cardiac stress test in Knoxville if you experience symptoms such as:

Chest pain during activity

A history of heart disease or high cholesterol

Irregular heartbeats with exertion

Shortness of breath or fatigue

A treadmill stress test in Knoxville can detect signs of coronary artery disease, assess the severity of existing heart conditions, or evaluate your heart’s response to exercise, ensuring your care plan is tailored to your needs. Early detection through cardiac function testing can prevent serious complications and improve your heart health.

What to Expect During Your Treadmill Stress Test?

A cardiac stress test in Knoxville at Neuro Heart Clinic is a safe procedure that typically takes 30–60 minutes. Here’s what you can expect.

Preparation

You’ll be connected to an EKG monitor with electrodes placed on your chest to track your heart activity. We’ll also measure your resting blood pressure.

Testing

You’ll walk on a treadmill that gradually increases in speed and incline, simulating physical exertion. Our team will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and EKG throughout the test. You can stop at any time if you feel discomfort.

Results

Your stress test results are analyzed on the same day by Dr. Yasir Akhtar and Amy Greene, who will discuss the findings with you and recommend next steps if needed.

To prepare for a treadmill stress test in Knoxville, wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking, and avoid eating a heavy meal or consuming caffeine at least 2–3 hours before your appointment.

Heart Conditions Diagnosed with Treadmill Stress Testing

A treadmill stress test can detect a variety of heart conditions, providing critical insights for your care. Some conditions identified through cardiac function testing in Knoxville include:

Coronary Artery Disease

Blockages in the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Heart Function Limitations

Reduced blood flow to the heart during activity.

Exercise-Induced Arrhythmias

Irregular heartbeats triggered by physical exertion.

Risk of Heart Events

Indicators of potential heart attack risk or worsening heart conditions.

If you’re experiencing symptoms or have risk factors for heart disease, a stress test near me at Neuro Heart Clinic can help uncover the root cause and guide treatment.

Dr. Akhtar is a fantastic cardiologist. My wife was having chest pain and symptoms consistent with pericarditis. I got her into contact with him on a Saturday morning as his phone was on-call for the TN Heart Clinic. He was able to see my wife just a few hours after her call. He did a full EKG and ECG work up and was able to give her a diagnosis. He went out of his way to help her with her acute flare-up of pericarditis. Excellent bedside manner and great pricing for out-of-pocket care! We can’t recommend him enough.
